Torii Doors

A torii is a traditional Japanese portal that allows marked entry into a sacred place and thus symbolize the difference between the physical world and the spiritual world. Most often they are erected at the entrance Shinto shrines.

Given its function as a gateway to the spiritual world, each crossing of a torii must be repeated in the to return to the physical world. The Japanese tend to bypass the torii when they don't think of coming back later.
